The Playhouse boulders are a nice cluster of granite boulders in Custer State Park. The boulders here offer a quiet area even though HWY 87 is a 5 minute walk from the boulders.
The first boulder developed in this area was Punks In The Park V5**** in reference to all the tourists in the park during summer. This area was found by John Andersen well he was hiking one day he wanted to get away from the tourists in the park. The first block that was found and developed was The Punks In The Park boulder. This is the gem block of the area and features beautiful granite features unlike other areas in the hills.

This boulder is a tall boulder with great quality granite all around. The problems on this boulder tend to be stiff for the grades. Most of the problems are 3 star and if you have one boulder to check out in this area this should be it.

1.)PROJECT V8?***- This is the project to the left of Punks In The Park V5. It has been climbed to the last move which seems to be the crux.  SDS and throw up to good holds. Make a big move by throwing out right to the sidepull feature with your left. Adjust and move your left hand up into either one of the upper seams/ sidepulls. Mantle and its over.

2.) PUNKS IN THE PARK V5****– One of the best V5s in the Hills according to some climbers. Don’t expect this one to give much it has also been called very stout for the grade. Start low about mid waist height on the obvious holds. Work up the series of 2 seams. Throw your left hand up towards the top out left to a great hidden sidepull. From here find whatever you can to make the scary and desperate mantle.

First Ascent: John Andersen 2015

3.) CRUEL MISTRESS  V4****Fun problem up a very obvious feature on the boulder. This problem starts standing and moves up directly underneath the “bulge feature :)” Grab underneath and get your feet high throw your right hand up and hit a sloper that is better and closer than when viewed from the ground.

First Ascent: Michael Madsen 2015

4.) PUNK-A-SAURAS V4** Starts standing on sandy holds. With clean up this should go away. Move up following the arete feature as it slightly curves right towards the top.
